Growing up I was always slightly more politically aware than most kids. My grandmother and I would watch election returns come in. The evening news was a regular part of the routine in our house, dinner was on the table by 5 so we could be in the living room watching NBC Nightly News by 6:30.

Politics was just a part of my life.

Sometime after college I lost the fire I had. Maybe the everyday grind just wore it out of me. Maybe I just got so bleeding tired of seeing my candidates defeated. I don't know. But what was once a major passion of mine has fallen by the wayside.

What got me thinking about this was the news of the death of Chriley Chisholm yesterday. I count her as one of the many inspirations in my life. If she saw a change needed to be made, she did it. The woman was a class act. It got the old wheels turning about getting involved again too. While I have very little time to spare anymore, what with two jobs, hockey and other things, if I can squeeze it in I want to get more involved in the political scene again.

Maybe it's time to start dusting off those dreams of a career in government again.
